Firearms Information

At this time the New Jersey State Police - Firearms Investigation Unit has yet to receive formal guidelines from the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General (NJ OAG) pertaining to the Legislative Mandated Permit to Carry Training requirements. Once the training guidelines are available the New Jersey State Police - Firearms Investigation Unit, they will immediately make them available to the public on this webpage.
Any inquiry (via. email or other means) pertaining to the Permit to Carry Training will not be responded to.

All firearm applications must be completed online through the links listed on this page.

NJ Residents: The Police Department that serves your community must assist you with your firearm application. Ex. - If you reside in a State Police jurisdiction or a Local Police Department jurisdiction, you must contact that State Police Station or Local Police Department for all assistance.

Dual Residents: If you are a dual resident of another state in addition to the State of New Jersey, you must apply to the jurisdiction you reside within New Jersey.

Out of State Applicants: If you live outside of the State of New Jersey and are not a dual resident, your application will be automatically assigned to one of 18 NJSP Stations upon submission. You will be notified of which NJSP Station your application was assigned to via your application confirmation email.

If you contact the NJSP Firearms Investigation Unit regarding an issue that must be handled by your State or Local Police Department, you will not receive a reply.

Shooting Ranges

Any shooting instruction should be conducted by a certified firearms instructor that must provide a copy of their certification to the person they train. Certified firearm instructors can advise individuals on the lawful and safe handling and storage of firearms in the State of New Jersey. They must also provide in-person New Jersey Use of Force instruction, and target training on a firing range to demonstrate proficiency. A certified firearms instructor can conduct this training at any shooting range that possesses the capability to achieve these goals to be compliant with the lawful standards for the State of New Jersey.
